Access to capital is the lifeblood of small cap companies.

The growth segment of equities is always on the hunt for the next injection of capital that will take good ideas and make them thrive.

Now in its 36th year, the annual Roth Conference will bring together institutional and high-net-worth investors with more than 500 small companies to help them make the connections they need to secure growth capital.

Run by Roth Capital, one of the largest, small-cap focused investment dealers in the United States, the Roth Conference is held in Laguna Niguel. Roth Canada President Brady Fletcher notes: “There’s something special about bringing capital together with growth companies. There’s a creative, high energy environment that helps create connections - and it doesn’t hurt getting somewhere sunny this time of year”

Fletcher is bringing a select group of his Canadian issuer clients to this invite-only event, which takes place March 17-19, 2024, at The Ritz Carlton Laguna Niguel in Dana Point, California. It’s a great place for Canadian issuers to meet with a broad range of institutional and high-net-worth investors and potentially access that pool of capital.

“When you look at the number of people that have RSVP’d both on the company and the investor side, we’re aiming for this to be close to 6,000 one-on-ones over the course of two days.” — Brady Fletcher, President, Roth Canada

Ranked a Top 100 Business Event

BizBash ranked the Annual Roth Conference as one of the Top 100 Business Events for 6 years in a row.

It is unique in terms of its size and scale for growth equity companies and their investors. This year’s event is going to be action packed. According to Fletcher, “When you look at the number of people that have RSVP’d both on the company and the investor side we’re aiming for this to include close to 6,000 one-on-ones over the course of two days.”

There’ll be two evenings of entertainment and a host of charity events to kick the conference off on that Sunday. And there’ll be all sorts of networking opportunities throughout the event.

For the institutional investors who attend, “It’s how you build trust, it’s how you learn the company’s story, and it’s the chance to build a deep relationship,” says Fletcher.

Multi-year relationship with Challenged Athletes Foundation

As it has for the past several years, this year’s Roth Conference will have a day devoted to supporting the Challenged Athletes Foundation.

The foundation helps athletes with disabilities find their way back to participating in the sports they love. Duane Roth, brother of Roth Capital founder Byron Roth, was a big supporter of the Challenged Athletes Foundation. Duane died in 2012 in a biking accident.

To date, the Roth Conference has raised US$1.7 million for the foundation. This year’s charity event activities will include a charity bike ride, a charity spin class, yoga, and even pickleball.

The charity bike ride, in particular, honors Duane Roth’s memory. The ride runs from the conference hotel down to Camp Pendleton. Challenged athletes ride Duane’s bike to honor his legacy.

Fletcher adds: “The funds raised through Challenged Athletes Foundation also support the Duane Roth Memorial Fund, which is remembering Duane’s legacy, granting funds to challenged athletes so they can participate in the sports they love. It’s quite an incredible event.”

He notes that these events help deepen the relationships between investors and issuers over the three-day period of the conference.

Connecting Canadian-listed companies with U.S. sources of capital

Roth Capital has been focused on supporting small-cap issuers out of the U.S. for almost 40 years.

Fletcher notes: “What we’ve done with Roth Canada is really create a unique platform to help Canadian growth equity names get access to this unique group of investors that we work with.”

Between the two days of non-stop meetings and networking, the two nights of entertainment and the charity activity day, the Roth Conference is a compelling way for issuers and investors to get to know each other.

Consistent with Roth’s commitment to sustainability, much of this year’s conference will be powered by solar. It’s just one more factor in the Roth Conference experience.

Fletcher concludes: “For us to be able to take a select number of Canadian companies down to participate in this unique event is a way for Roth Canada to help add value to our clients. The ability for us to give back, adding value to our clients with unique connections, having some fun with the entertainment, and through the CAF charity activities - that’s what’s so important to us during the conference..”
